Of Gym and Crabs

Happy Deepavali to all.

Went to the gym today, found a new fetish for the running-machine-thingy and seeing the calorie counter go up and up. Burnt 300 calories in half an hour, probably chicken steps compared to other powerhouse cardio-doers, but it is a new record for me. Also think my gym routine is slowly (but surely working), or at least I hope so. I really don't want to go down the path of protein shakes, but I'm not that sure how much to eat after a workout anyway. Hmmm.

With my group of crazy uni friends, we went all the way to a jakun place somewhere near the Gold Coast in Sepang. Food was good, including the 2 crab dishes. The thing I hate about eating crabs is that:

1. I usually don't have the patience with my food. A reason why I don't like fish in general.
2. When I eat crabs I usually break the shells with my teeth if I can, which isn't good for it.
3. When I take the sauce of the crab, I sometimes bite on the tiny shell pieces.
4. I chew and swallow some of the softer shell portions, but when swallowed will scrape my throat.

I'm just a lazy eater. Hmmm.

Work shall be good tomorrow! It has to be!

After not too much deliberation, I have decided to take a hiatus of an undetermined length for several reasons:

1. That blogging prevents myself to be fully open with what I share (this might sound a little paradoxical if you look at number...).

2. That one of my goals for this year is to keep a personal journal (like a diary) to develop my intra-personal skills, this which conflicts with the first point because being open with myself does not fix the not being open with others.

3. That not many people come here anyway (other than the various spam programs and the occasional friend worried about me. KUDOS TO YOU~~~).

Sorry for not being dilligent with keeping up with your lives myself. I'll try harder, thanks for everything.

To those who somehow read this, I afraid to say that I have been a very bad friend.

When you don't meet friends conveniently anymore, you sometimes feel weirded by having to take the initiative. It is naturally so much easier to be avoidant and fearful of the encounters you might have a chance of having. Not to mention the various tiny things you try to hide from everyone from fear of being ridiculed, misunderstood or worse, be seen in a strange new light. Somehow you don't even understand yourself, or possibly haven't even chosen a side because, darn, staying on the middle fence is so comfortable.

Introversion suits me, but it will only be time before I hit the bed of thorns and shatter.

I guess I really want to say, I do not mean it. Intentions are but a fleeting reality from true actions.

Three Things I Hate When I Wipe Floors

3. Slipping

This happens when you wipe the floor so clean that you slip over the polished surfaces like tofu over a frozen lake. And you happen to land on your knees with a resounding thud. Not all that assuring I tell you.

2. Grit

This happens to be too big to be dust, too small to be debris, and too sticky to be vacuum-able, forcing you to wash the cloth clean again each time you cover about half a meter square.

1. Hair

Long, short, thin, thick: it doesn't matter. They stick so stubbornly to the floor and not your cloth, and by the time you pick up about 2 or 3, the cloth will start rejecting additional hairs and flattening the rest against the floor. Nightmare. No wonder so many horror movies are focused on hair...

P.S.: Too lazy to edit the font from this post onwards. Barely noticeable, but you'll understand.

Hiatus and One and a Half Hours

Taking a break from my Tribute runs.

I cannot believe it: I gained ~10 kg in ~3 years! And I actually ~~feel~~ ~~think~~ know that I am more physically active now compared to then. I strongly believe that all that gain isn't muscle.

So this is what I did:

It was supposed to be a random direction run without a fixed path (I've done this before, twice reported in my old blog, but this is the longest). I tried to pass as many friends' houses on the way though. I pancit-ed about a million times in the process, and about halfway I was somewhat delirious. But I'm proud of myself.

EDIT: Oh, and when I got back, HUC called me and said I have a cheque waiting for me next month. Birthday presents are really on the dot.

To those who are music illiterate, you have about 1 hour left to celebrate Vivaldi's 332nd birthday, in Malaysia that is.

Antonio Vivaldi is probably to most famous Baroque composer from Venice, known for his works of The Four Seasons. My favorite is Winter as shown below. To fully understand the music, you have to understand the culture which it was written in which covers architecture, art, social anthropology, theater and even lifestyles. Go Google Baroque and you'd find plenty of material to keep you in awe.

P.S.: BTW, all the masks in the video make all of ours last year look like amateurs.

1. Beauty is Overrated

Everyone is beautiful these days. Seriously. With the advent of plastic surgery, laser treatments and other dermological and fitness regimes, anyone can get closer to what I would call "niche-selected-crass-commercialized-beauty", a type of beauty set by fashion and style critics. Even without dough, people can resort to traditional methods which are sometimes far superior than their modern counterparts. Culture seems to become assimilated with commercial beauty, with parents become more concerned with their child's physical growth and maintenance. People expect Korea to be one of the nations with the most plastic surgery operations by Switzerland beat them easily - Swiss (214.621 people for every 100,000) vs Koreans (19.654 people for every 100, 000). The truth is this, there are just too many beautiful people on this planet (guys included) to the extent that beauty almost represents normality.

Beauty = Survival of the Fittest/Sexual Selection

In fact, because beauty is now a normality, the new beautiful should be

Beauty = Uniqueness

Within the past 10 years, many advocates have been pushing hard to promote inner beauty and subjectivity, the most popular being Campaign For Real Beauty. In reality, they actually help create an environment where individuals with unique features stand out even more than they already are. Similarly, the new ugly has now transformed to averageness. People with the most average facial features are scientifically the most easily forgotten. It's even better to be ugly now than average looking, because even though people might not like you for your looks, you will be memorable to some extent as long as you are not TOO ugly (based on "niche-selected-crass-commercialized-beauty" or "evolved-subjective-individualism". Unfortunately, the old beauty is still an important variable to determine success of copulating and having a baby, not to mention the ability for the children to grow up without being teased about having an ugly mother.

The next time you look in the mirror and you do not like certain features on yourself, pat yourself on the back, for you have passed the uniqueness test!

2. Ideal Governments

If you haven't read schmae's blog yet, I highly recommend the post on E.P.I.C. UNITY. I really applaud their effort for making changes on the microsystems level, but they really need almost the entire nation to be in it to change the whole government arena.

I just hate how democracy is misused. To be fair, no countries practice democracy, but most utilize subforms of it such as parliamentary democracy, constitutionary democracy and so on. The truth is:

Just because people elect their leaders, it doesn't mean they have 100% faith in everything the leaders do. It just means that they were preferable to the opposition.

Preferable? With just that factor, leaders of yesterday, today and tomorrow are led by the illusion of supremacy. I'm not saying that our leaders should be perfect, I'm just saying that democracy can't work this way, ideally. In fact, voting for one leader out of many isn't solving the problem; it will just naturally cause segregation in the nation.

Nations won't change in a day, or probably not even in the next 50 years. However, we should start being aware of the issues surrounding our nation and be a person who votes for principles and ideas and actual work, not just for individuals and parties.

Shwimmen

The past few days have been quite filled up, at least for my standards. In fact I've been getting so much exercise that I cannot but say that I should've lost some weight. One thing I have to post about is about a new card game I discovered and taught friends on the 25th, named Shwimmen. It was one of the first time they actually played a game I taught, so it should be quite significant. To those who have played then, I'm sorry to say that my rules got a little mixed up, so I'm posting this up for your clarification.

Shwimmen (German, literally 'swimming')

Similar to 31 or Scat in other countries.

Originally conceived by Christian Moeller, adapted for gamble play.

Works optimally for 4 players, but playable from 2-8.

Uses a 31 card deck (7-10, J, Q, K, A)

Cards has face values of as such: 7-10 (face value), 10-K (10), A (11)

Opening

1. The dealer deals three cards starting from the dealer's left continuing in a clockwise direction plus an extra hand for the centre of the table.

2. The dealer chooses whether he (/she) would like to keep his (her) hand or trade it from the one in the centre before seeing the cards. Once the trade is done, there is no reverting back.

3. The cards that the dealer does not want is opened in the centre.

Play

1. Everyone starts with three lives represented by three chips. The denomination of each chip is determined before the game starts.

2. The dealer's left starts first. During a turn, a player may either:

-----i. Trade any card with another on the table

-----ii. Pass

-----iii. Knock (explained later)

3. If at any moment you have a special hand (due to a initial deal or after a trade, you MUST expose it and the round ends without anyone else having a turn.

-----i. Feuer (literally 'fire') - Three As of any type is worth 32 points.

-----ii. Schnauz (literally, '31') - One A and another two 10-point cards all of the same suit is worth 31 points.

4. If everyone passes in succession, the three cards in the middle is replaced with a new three.

5. If at any time a player decides that his hand is stronger than the rest, he may 'knock', which will give every other player one more turn before the round ends.

Scoring

1. When the round ends, everyone's hand is exposed. The score for a hand is done by adding up the values of the cards with the same suit. For example: 7, 9, K would count 16 points (for the two hearts); 8, 9, J would count 10 (for the jack of spades).

2. Any other three-of-a-kind other than A scores 30.5 points. So, A, A, A (32) beats A, K,J (31) which beats 9, 9, 9 (30.5) which beats K, Q, J (30).

3. In the case of a tie for triples, the highest rank wins over; A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7 (low). In the rare case of ties of combinations, the highest suit wins over; Clubs (high), Spades, Hearts, Diamonds (low).

4. The lowest scoring individual(s) adds one of his life (chip) to the pot. If the game ends with a Feuer, all other players add one life to the pot.

5. The game will continue with a new round until someone loses all his lives. The person is considered to be shwimmen (literally, 'swimming'). If a person who is shwimmen loses another round, all lives in the pot goes to the person with the most lives. If tied, the pot is split evenly.

6. The game ends and a new one can be started with everyone having 3 lives again.

Overall, this game is quite challenging and strategic with everyone focusing on NOT LOSING their lives, rather than winning everyone's lives.

Cheap NOT_EQUALS Bad

I found this picture sitting in the lost archives of my PC. It was taken by a relatively newbie camera Fujifilm FinePix F100fd. Since everyone these days seem to have professional-level DSLRs, this is just a testimony that it takes more skill to wield a lousier camera to perfection than to wield a professional camera to mere professional levels. (I'm not claiming to be one of the former, I'm just making a point.)
